Interplay Series - Bill Evans and the Impressionists

Kate Williams Trio with Bristol Ensemble conducted by William Goodchild perform Bill Evans and the Impressionists.

A new project supported by Arts Council England and Bristol International Jazz and Blues Festival featuring celebrated UK jazz pianist Kate Williams and her Trio, Bristol Ensemble - Bristol's professional chamber orchestra - and composer, orchestrator, conductor William Goodchild.

There are two concerts: one at Colston Hall in Bristol (for details, please click HERE), and one in Milton Court Concert Hall in London (click HERE).

The programme for both concerts features new orchestral arrangements by Kate Williams and William Goodchild of some of Bill Evans's finest compositions alongside works by French Impressionist era composers Ravel, Debussy and Satie.

Bill Evans is widely considered to be one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time, and perhaps the most influential of the post-World War II jazz pianists/ composers. This concert places his music next to the French composers that had a profound influence on his work, and utilises the orchestra to present his compositions and sound in a new way.

WWF-UK Living Planet Centre

WWF-UK's The Living Planet Centre
William Goodchild has recently worked with WWF-UK at its brand new UK headquarters called The Living Planet Centre. LPC is home to the WWF Experience - an exciting interactive exhibition that brings to life the secrets of the natural world, and the threats it faces.

WWF Experience
At the heart of the WWF Experience are four interactive architect-designed zones with audio-visuals, each focussing on one key theme: forests, rivers, oceans and wildlife. Each zone allows you to experience first hand the sights, sounds and sometimes the smells of their diverse natural environments.

The zones, designed by Jason Bruges Studio, feature films from the wild, enhanced by a soundtrack by award-winning composer William Goodchild (Wild Russia, Miracle in the Marshes of Iraq, Jungle Gremlins of Java) and legendary sound designer Kate Hopkins (Frozen Planet, Wild China).

The principal challenge in terms of music and sound was created by the fact that the zones are not soundproofed. The wooden structures are speakers, with music and sound being conveyed to each via a feonic transmitter. Additionally, the music and sound within each zone, along with the visual footage, is triggered when a person enters the zone. It was therefore necessary to create four pieces of music that would work either individually or together in any combination when randomly triggered by people entering the zones.

The Living Planet Centre and WWF Visitor Experience were opened by Sir David Attenborough in November 2013.

Get Rich or Die Mining (National Geographic)

If you have access to a Sky subscription then look out for Get Rich or Die Mining on National Geographic, Monday 27 January 2014 at 10 pm.

One-off special: adventure documentary. Gem hunter Guy Clutterbuck puts together an elite mining team and travels to Sri Lanka, where they hope to dig up, cut and sell enough rough sapphires to make a fortune. But they are a group of strangers risking their own time, money and reputations on their leader's promise of adventure and profit. They have only six days to complete their mission.

David Johnson, Director: 'At a viewing last week it was very interesting. We were in a bar and people started off chatting and drinking, but there came a point about seven minutes in where all conversation ceased and by the end of the show you could hear a pin drop - so worth sticking with.'

Ultimate Honey Badger (National Geographic)

Drop into the secret life of orphaned honey badger Badgie as she learns to face the wilds of South Africa's Tswalu Kalahari Reserve alone. Join her at ground level on mouse, snake and scorpion hunts, and watch her battle a porcupine for ownership of her burrow. Badgers are famous for being the most fearless animals in Africa. The aim of this film was to follow the steps it would take for this 10-week old orphan to become a fully-fledged, wild honey badger.

First transmission took place on Nat Geo Wild, January 2014. The documentary debut was a smash success and is the highest-rated Sunday night telecast in Nat Geo Wild's history.
